Lucy Hall arrives in the Seychelles determined to leave her worries behind. The tropical paradise looks sun-soaked and picture-perfect—but as Lucy soon discovers, appearances can be very deceptive. A deadly secret lurks in the island’s history, buried deep but not forgotten. And it is about to come to light.

As black clouds begin to gather over what promised to be a relaxing family break, Lucy realises that her father stands in the eye of the coming storm. A shadow from his past is threatening to destroy all that he holds dear—including the lives of his loved ones.

A dark truth is about to explode into their lives, and that truth is going to hit them right between the eyes.

My thoughts

Journey to Death is my introduction to Leigh Russell, and it is also the start of a series featuring young Lucy Hall. It is a lovely refreshing summer mystery, designed to make you wish you could join Lucy and her family in the beautiful Seychelles.

This is the story of family, whose summer holiday to the Seychelles takes a nasty turn. Lucy is in her twenties and holidaying with her parents, after a breakup with her fiancé. Lucy’s dad George used to live and work in the Seychelles, year ago. He was forced to leave in 1977, following a political upheaval. His past comes back to haunt him, as their holiday takes a dark turn and Lucy’s mother goes missing. Where has she gone? Will Lucy manage to track her down in time? Why is somebody targetting the family?

This is a very promising introduction to a series, offering a gentle mystery linked to a family in a gorgeous climate. There are moments of tension and fear, as we see the family suffer and Lucy take control. We slowly get to know Lucy and see that she is determined and courageous, when faced with adversity. Lucy is the sort of girl you want on your side!

I grew fond of Lucy and see her as having huge potential. She is a twenty-first century Miss Marple in the making. This is a series to watch.

Journey to Death would be an ideal beach read for the summer!

Leigh Russell was on the blog recently with her thoughts on The Appeal of Crime Fiction

About Northern Crime

Reviewer with a mind of her own. This is a collection of book reviews, which started in 2014. Mostly crime and odd other genres thrown in. Some I loved. Some I loathed. You get the picture.
