Hello and welcome to my day on the Between You and Me Blog Tour!
I am chuffed to have a guest post from début author, Lisa Hall on the Blog. Lisa talks about the casting of Between You and Me and gives a little insight into some of the key characters.
Between You and Me is published by Carina UK on 17 March 2016.
The Cast of Between You and Me
It’s difficult to make a decision over who would play the characters in Between You and Me, should there ever be a movie made. There is only a small range of characters, and while some are easy to cast, others are not so much. I see Geoff, Charlie’s colleague at Hunter, Crisp and Wilson as a kind of John Candy sort of character – large and a bit wheezy. Lucian, for me, appeared as Roman Abramovich – the same salt and pepper hair, beard and icy East European look. Laura, I envisage as an older version of Karen Gillan, with her girl-next-door looks and beautiful red hair.
Sal and Charlie on the other hand…how can I possibly cast two of the most important people in my life over the past year? I have lived and breathed this couple for the best part of a year – they are as much a part of me as my children – and to imagine them as other people is nearly impossible. What I do know though, is that Sal appreciates the quieter things in life – a good book, cuddles with Maggie, a late brunch on a Sunday after a lie in, while Charlie is all about the material things in life – an expensive car to drive, a house on the right street, designer labels on your clothes. Sal thinks the best way to deal with things is to sit and discuss them until you reach an agreeable resolution, while Charlie blows up and shouts, always on a short fuse. Sal likes Johnny Cash, battered Levis and picking fresh veg from the allotment at the end of the garden, while Charlie prefers classical music (on the surface, it creates a better impression on clients apparently), wearing a suit to work every day for that feeling of importance, and fancy restaurants.
They might seem to be complete opposites, and in many ways they are, however something at the beginning of their relationship drew them together, locking them into the never-ending cycle in which we find them in Between You and Me. Although I feel like I know Sal and Charlie so well, they both still keep their secrets from me – but one thing I do know, is that they both do what they believe is best for their family.
My FIVE STAR review of Between You and Me
I love it when an author explores a dark, twisted relationship. Debut author, Lisa Hall does just that with shocking and heart-thumping authenticity.
The story explores the relationship between Sal and Charlie. We hear from both of them and see them in action. Sal stays at home, looking after their young daughter and Charlie works as a corporate lawyer. This family looks perfect on the outside; stable, successful and happy. However Charlie has a temper and sometimes strikes out at Sal. What will it take for Sal to leave?
So often we make assumptions about relationships, about other peoples’ relationships. Lisa Hall takes us into the murky world of domestic abuse. We get to know and understand Sal and Charlie. We see how Sal has become a victim to Charlie’s need for control. It is disturbing and chilling. It feels very real.
And a quick mention for that twist! I did not see that coming AT ALL. I usually spot these things and I didn’t! Clever! Very clever!
Recommended. I hope Lisa Hall has many more stories like this, up her sleeve!
About Lisa Hall
Lisa Hall loves words, reading and everything there is to love about books. She has dreamed of being a writer since she was a little girl – either that or a librarian – and after years of talking about it, was finally brave enough to put pen to paper (and let people actually read it). Lisa lives in a small village in Kent, surrounded by her towering TBR pile, a rather large brood of children, dogs, chickens and ponies and her long-suffering husband. She is also rather partial to eating cheese and drinking wine.
