In Her Wake by Amanda Jennings- Blog Tour Review

A perfect life … until she discovered it wasn’t her own

A tragic family event reveals devastating news that rips apart Bella’s comfortable existence. Embarking on a personal journey to uncover the truth, she faces a series of traumatic discoveries that take her to the ruggedly beautiful Cornish coast, where hidden truths, past betrayals and a 25-year-old mystery threaten not just her identity, but also her life. Chilling, complex and profoundly moving, In Her Wake is a gripping psychological thriller that questions the nature of family – and reminds us that sometimes the most shocking crimes are committed closest to home.

Welcome to my day on the In Her Wake Blog Tour. I am proud to present my review, of what I predict will be one of the strongest and best psychological thrillers of 2016.

My thoughts

There is one word that sums up my feelings about this book. WOW! I went into reading this book blind, with only a vague sense of what it was about. I read it quickly in a day, consumed by Bella and her incredible back story.

This is a book about a woman, who thinks she knows who she is. She seems to be an average middle class librarian, brought up by protective parents and married to a much older man, who cares for her. Bella unexpectedly finds herself with an identity crisis; following revelations, after the death of her mother. Bella’s search for answers, takes her to Cornwall.

I do not think that anyone can read In Her Wake without coming away with a sense of wonder. The subject matter, that I can only allude to, is rather shocking and sad. But Amanda Jennings handles it, with impressive maturity and compassion. There is a depth and a sensitivity shown to all of the characters. I loved following Bella through the highs and lows of her journey of self-discovery.

I could imagine this on the television, with the evocative landscape of Cornwall, the haunting of Bella and the time leaps back and forwards. This is undoubtedly a powerful, beautiful and emotionally strong read. If you are looking for a book that will leave you with a huge sense of positivity and will carry you on a journey from darkness to light, this is it. I do not often praise psychological reads. I can honestly say, this is one that stands out for me from the crowd and it has been a pleasure to read.

Highly recommended.

About Northern Crime

Reviewer with a mind of her own. This is a collection of book reviews, which started in 2014. Mostly crime and odd other genres thrown in. Some I loved. Some I loathed. You get the picture.
